Decatur’s Redbird Rookies League was formed in 2008 thanks to a successful partnership between the Decatur Park District and DMH. The St. Louis Cardinals created Redbird Rookies in 2004 to allow kids to play baseball free of charge. Rawlings donates equipment and uniforms, and the Cardinals offer specialized training so coaches can learn innovative character-building techniques. The Redbird Rookies instills the values of teamwork, integrity, self-esteem and leadership in the “classroom” of a baseball setting. Redbird Rookies is free for boys and girls aged 5 – 13 and they can be in the league for a maximum of 2 seasons. If you are interested in coaching or have a young athlete who would like to play baseball the Redbird Rookies way, call Tony Albertina at the DISC at 429-3472 or email him at email@example.com or Erin Paulson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
