Due to continuous freezing temperatures and severe Central Illinois winter weather, the Overlook Adventure water park will not open this summer as originally planned.
“Fortunately, at the end of the season last year the Board had the foresight to request that Fairview Pool be winterized in the interest of being prepared for a weather occurrence like this. Thankfully our community will have access to a public pool this summer,” said Bill Clevenger, Executive Director of the Decatur Park District.
The Decatur Park District will re-open Fairview Family Aquatics Center as the community’s public pool for the 2019 season. A wide variety of swimming lessons, open swim times and rentals for parties will continue to be offered for the full 2019 season at Fairview Pool. The facility is currently hiring for lifeguards, instructors, front desk and concession positions.
“It is disappointing news to announce as we have been optimistic about the project. Unfortunately, we’ve lost 8 weeks of workable days due to freezing temperatures and precipitation this winter and the future forecast isn’t looking much better,” stated Chris Harrison, President of the Decatur Park Board of Commissioners. “In the interest of providing the community with a premier aquatics facility and keeping safety top of mind, we want to be sure things are done right and not rush completion.”
Phil Cochran, Park District Project Construction Manager stated, “This winter’s conditions have been some of the harshest for site construction we’ve had in many, many years. Contractors onsite have worked diligently, however the issues that come with severe weather cannot be overcome.”
Additionally, the Scovill Zoo train extension and Midstate soccer complex pavilion projects have experienced the same weather conditions. It is the District’s intent to make every effort to complete these projects by late spring 2019, but weather will dictate the timetable. The Devon G. Buffett Amphitheater is on schedule to open May 24th.
