Scovill Zoo’s education programs offer opportunities for animal lovers of all ages to discover the animal kingdom. With Zoo Academy classes, guided tours, and a fantastic Mobile Zoo, Scovill Zoo provides fun, hands-on connections to the animal world.

Pajama Party with Santa

Santa is coming to Scovill Zoo! Bring your favorite pillow, wear your PJ’s, and visit with Santa while you make an ornament, decorate cookies, and enjoy an animal presentation. Parents must be present.

Animal Crackers Classes

Children aged 3 – 5 listen to a story, meet an animal, create a craft with their adult guest(s) and snack on animal crackers! Offered throughout the year on Saturday mornings. Call 421-7435 to register or visit the online registration page found here.

Winter Classroom Programs

Science class is now in session at Scovill Zoo! Our winter classroom programs are designed for specific grade levels (Pre K – 12) with the Next Generation Science Standards. Your class or group can come to our classroom at the zoo, or we can come to you.

Fee: $75 per class (up to 30 students) at the zoo. $100 per class + mileage to and from your location.

Animal Senses

Grade: Pre K – 1
Program Length: 1.5 hours

Explore the senses: sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. With imaginative, interactive activities, as well as live animals and biofacts, you’ll discover how the 5 senses help animal survive and meet their needs. You’ll also compare human senses to those of animals.

Movin’ & Groovin’

Grade: Pre K – 1
Program Length: 1.5 hours

Through role-playing exercises, you’ll learn how and why animals move in different ways. Meet and touch live animals that walk, crawl, slither and hop.

 

Backbone or No?

Grade: 1 – 3
Program Length: 2 hours

Discover the distinction between vertebrate and invertebrate animals by observing and interacting with live animals and artifacts. Learn the defining characteristics of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Habitats ‘Round the World

Grade: 1 – 3
Program Length: 2 hours

Did you know that all organisms need the same components of a habitat in order to survive: food, water, shelter, and space? With the use of live animals, photos, and biofacts, you’ll learn how animals meet these  basic needs in a variety of habitats around the world.

Learning about Life Cycles

Grade 1 – 3
Program Length: 2 hours

Learn about the life cycles of insects, birds, and amphibians and how they differ from human development.

Float Your Boat

Grade: 3 – 6
Program Length: 2 hours

Study buoyancy and density with experiments using the scientific method.

Remarkable Reptiles

Grade: 2 – 5
Program Length: 2 hours

Explore the world of live snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodiles! Activities will focus on each type of reptile.

The Raptor Report

Grade: 3 – 6
Program Length: 2 hours

Dissect owl pellets in a hands-on lab to scientifically explore raptor diets. Meet a live bird of prey, and discover the adaptive tools raptors have to be successful predators in their environment.

Skull-ology!

Grade: 6 – 8
Program Length: 2 hours

In this exciting session, you will use the scientific method, collect data, and use dichotomous keys to identify a variety of animals based on their skulls.

Workin’ on the Wild Side*

Grade: 9 – 12
Program Length: 2 hours

Love animals? Learn about various zoo careers by job shadowing a zoo keeper and assisting with simple keeper tasks. *Onsite only at Scovill Zoo.
