RED TAIL RUN GOLF CLUB: FACT SHEET
- Red Tail Run Golf Club, a Decatur Park District property, is an
18-hole signature course designed by Raymond Floyd in the prairie
style, using native plants, flowers and grasses
- Course construction began in the fall of 2004. Red Tail Run will open
in mid-May of 2006
- Red Tail Run is located at the intersection of Route 51 South and
Grove Road, on the south edge of Decatur
- Red Tail Run is named after the red-tailed hawk, a raptor, which is
making a strong comeback in Illinois. The hawk is frequently seen
along Route 51 South in Decatur, where the course is located
- The natural setting is reminiscent of Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in
New York and provides similar vistas of the prairie as seen by early
Illinois settlers
- Red Tail Run Golf Club is the fourth signature, public course in Illinois.
Other signature public courses include: The Den by Arnold Palmer
in Bloomington; Stonewolf by Jack Nicklaus in Fairview Heights; Spencer
T. Olin by Arnold Palmer in Alton
- The course features five tee boxes in order to provide players of
all skill levels a challenging game of golf. The course plays 5,100
yards from the front tees to 7,300 yards from the back tees
- “Raymond's Turn,” holes 13 through 17, play through old
established oaks in a traditional parkland setting
- Red Tail Run Golf Club will be home to the Decatur Park District First
Tee Learning Center. This center is designed
in partnership with the First Tee program to impact the lives of young
people by providing education programs that promote character development
and life-enhancing values through the game of golf
- Decatur Park District
has three other 18-hole golf courses in the system: Hickory Point
Golf Course, site of the Futures Golf Tour, the developmental tour
of the LPGA, Scovill Golf Course and Nelson Golf Course
