RED TAIL RUN GOLF CLUB: FACT SHEET

  • Red Tail Run Golf Club, a Decatur Park District property, is an 18-hole signature course designed by Raymond Floyd in the prairie style, using native plants, flowers and grasses
  • Course construction began in the fall of 2004. Red Tail Run will open in mid-May of 2006
  • Red Tail Run is located at the intersection of Route 51 South and Grove Road, on the south edge of Decatur
  • Red Tail Run is named after the red-tailed hawk, a raptor, which is making a strong comeback in Illinois. The hawk is frequently seen along Route 51 South in Decatur, where the course is located
  • The natural setting is reminiscent of Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York and provides similar vistas of the prairie as seen by early Illinois settlers
  • Red Tail Run Golf Club is the fourth signature, public course in Illinois. Other signature public courses include: The Den by Arnold Palmer in Bloomington; Stonewolf by Jack Nicklaus in Fairview Heights; Spencer T. Olin by Arnold Palmer in Alton
  • The course features five tee boxes in order to provide players of all skill levels a challenging game of golf. The course plays 5,100 yards from the front tees to 7,300 yards from the back tees
  • “Raymond's Turn,” holes 13 through 17, play through old established oaks in a traditional parkland setting
  • Red Tail Run Golf Club will be home to the Decatur Park District First Tee Learning Center. This center is designed in partnership with the First Tee program to impact the lives of young people by providing education programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf
  • Decatur Park District has three other 18-hole golf courses in the system: Hickory Point Golf Course, site of the Futures Golf Tour, the developmental tour of the LPGA, Scovill Golf Course and Nelson Golf Course
