CHICAGO DISTRICT GOLF ASSOCIATION GIVES HIGH RANKS FOR RED TAIL RUN
DECATUR, IL - Red Tail Run Golf Club by RaymondFloyd in Decaturhas received good marks from the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA). The CDGA rated the signature golf course designed by PGA Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd on the course rating and slope.
“I am impressed by the layout of Red Tail Run because it’s a course everyone can enjoy,” said Rick LeHew, Director of Field Services, CDGA. “It will be a challenge from the tips and playable from the middle so it’s enjoyable for players of all skill levels.”
The United States Golf Association (USGA) has extensive guidelines and detailed formulas for calculating these ratings. Two major components to determine course rating and slope are distance and obstacles. Distance is not just total yards, but the effective playing length, which takes into account five factors: roll, elevation, dogleg/forced lay-up, prevailing wild and altitude. Obstacles factor in items such as topography, fairway, green target, recoverability and rough, bunkers, out of bounds/extreme rough, water hazards, trees, green surface and psychological factors.
Red Tail Run, with its large undulating greens, wide rolling fairways and native grasses, is designed for players of all skill levels with five sets of tees at each hole, from Championship to Junior. “Red Tail Run is designed for players of all skill levels,” said Rick Anderson, Director of Golf for the Decatur Park District. “The CDGA ratings reflect that, illustrating the playability of this course from the novice to the championship golfer.”

“The greens should be ready to play by the spring,” said Associate Professor Tom Voight, University of Illinois Extension Turf Specialist. Voight, who has been collaborating with the Decatur Park District on Red Tail Run, said the native plants, the hallmark of this course, will spend the first two years taking root. “In the third year, is when you will see the true look of the prairie style course.”
A property of the Decatur Park District, Red Tail Run is only the fourth “signature” public golf course in Illinois. The course, located on Decatur’s south side at 520 West Grove Road, will open in the spring of 2006.
