Your young artist deserves to learn from the best!  Cultural arts programs at the Decatur Park District are conducted by professionally trained, credentialed instructors with extensive experience in theatre.  The program is under the direction of Marie Jagger-Taylor, Cultural Arts Supervisor, and Megan Mooney, Assistan Cultural Arts Supervisor..

 

2009 - 2010 Dance & drama classes

If you love to dance and perform, sign up now for the Decatur Park District's fall and winter sessions!  The dance/drama curriculum is comprehensive and designed to give students the best possible instruction, helping them build confidence in their abilities and instilling a sense of commitment to themselves and their peers.  Dance and drama opportunities are availbale for all ages.  Dance classes culminate with a recital on April 30 & May 1.

DAnce classes

The Park District's introductory dance programs familiarize students with the basics of ballet, jazz, and tap.  Company I and II classes provide in-depth instruction for the more experienced dancer.  Performance opportunities are available to all, and an end-of-the-year recital on May 7 and 8 culminates the dance program (those interested in performing in the recital must take both semesters of dance).

Intro I

Introduces 3 year-olds to basic dance concepts through the rhythm of music, the imagination of the child, and the motor skills of ballet.

Intro II

Allows 4 year-old dancers to develop fundamental skills of dance through creative play and the use of music, drama and ballet.

Beginning Level

Introduces 6 - 9 year-olds to the basics of jazz, tap and ballet.

Intermediate Level

Continues to develop the skills of jazz, tap and ballet techniques.

Advanced Level

Designed for students who have had previous training.  Classes are offered in jazz, tap and balllet.

Combo Class

Designed to introduce jazz and tap.

Company Class

Designed for the more advanced 8th grade and older dancer/performer.  Classes include ballet, lyrical, jazz, tap and pre-pointe.  Placement is based on consent from Cultural Arts Supervisor.

Adult Classes

Include jazz, tap, and Hip Hop.

Ballroom Classes

For all aged 16+ who wish to learn the moves of contestants in Dancing with the Stars!  Classes include swing, ballroom, tango, etc.

 

DRAMA classes

The Park District's drama program provides acting classes for students in grades K - 2, 3 - 5, 6 - 9, teens (13 - 18) and adult (aged 18+).   Participants learn the fundamentals of acting, including character development, vocal technique, and improvisational skills through preparation and performance of monologues and/or scenes.  Classes culminate in a presentation for family and friends.
