Tickets for Perform’s Once On This Island are now on sale. With a poignant story and catchy Caribbean-flavored score, this musical garnered 8 Tony nominations during its Broadway run. Public and school performances are scheduled for March 9 – 13. Tickets are $7 for reserved seating at the Decatur Civic Center Theater. To purchase your tickets you may visit the Decatur Park District Administrative Office (620 E. Riverside Ave.), online, or call 422-5911.

Scovill Zoo Volunteer Training

If you enjoy working with animals and kids, an exciting volunteer opportunity awaits you at Scovill Zoo. Training covers categories of different animals and volunteer duties. No experience required! Staley Striders Bloomington AAU Indoor Track Meet Results

This past weekend, February 10 – 12, seven Staley Striders student athletes participated in the AAU Indoor National Track Meet in Bloomington, Illinois. Haley Rager received 3rd place in the girls 1500m racewalk (11:53.12), Kelsey Cleary earned 3rd place in the girls 1500m run (5:32.54), the girls 4×4 relay team placed 3rd (5:48.30), and Beau Marquis received 3rd place in the boys 3000m run (12:21.21) and the pentathlon for his high jump, long jump, 55H, shot put and 1000m run. The club earned a total of 17 medals. Results for all the Staley Striders participants appear below.

Youth Baseball/Softball Sign-Ups

The Decatur Park District offers baseball and softball leagues for boys aged 4 – 14 and girls aged 4 – 15 who have experience in the sport and are looking for a more competitive environment to grow into better ball players.

2012 Sign-Up Information

Parent/guardian must accompany youth to registration. A copy of the player’s birth certificate is also required. A $10.00 fee will be added to registration requests after March 12. Registration ends March 23. Decatur Youth Baseball/Softball will provide shirts, hats and trophies. For more information, please call Steve Fox at the DISC at 429-3472.

Golf Demo Days at the DISC

Golfers can prepare for the spring season with Golf Demo Days at the DISC’s Indoor Golf Center. Participants can try out the latest golf clubs and see the newest accessories from Titleist on February 18, PING on February 25 and Cleveland on March 3. Demo Days will be from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. except on February 25 which will be from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Indoor Golf Center is located on the 2nd floor of the DISC, 1295 W. Wood. Come join Scovill Zoo for new 2012 Animal Crackers Classes! Children aged 3 – 5 listen to a story, meet an animal, create a craft with their adult guests and snack on animal crackers! Classes are offered throughout the year on Saturday mornings at Scovill Zoo from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. or 11 – 11:45 a.m. Upcoming topics include Animal Extremes (March 10) and Down on the Farm (April 14). New Winter Drama Sessions

Sign up now for the Decatur Park District’s winter drama classes! Preschool – high school classes begin the week of January 9 at the Poage Arts & Recreation Center (2020 N. Oakland Ave.). Registration is open until January 17. For more information about a particular class or to request a dance/drama schedule, please call Marie Jagger-Taylor at 421-6648.

Creative Play (Ages 4 – 5)
Thursdays, 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. or 4:15 – 5 p.m.

K – 2nd (Ages 5 – 8 )
Come explore the world of theatre as these kids create and perform an ordinary sit com about an extraordinary classroom! Students will build both confidence, and creativity!
Thursdays, 5 – 6 p.m.

3rd – 5th (Ages 8 – 11)
Lights, camera, action, purpose. Join this group of Enviro-kids learning the skills of being on stage, and on-camera while picking up cool tips on how to take care of our planet. Students will spend their class time putting together fun skits and videos telling others about recycling, and energy conservation.
Tuesdays, 5 – 6 p.m.

6th – 9th (Ages 11 – 13)
Explore the same beginnings as comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler by learning the skill of Improvisation. This class focuses on teaching students how to think on their feet, how to be a good scene partner, and even essential audition skills.
Tuesdays, 6 – 7 p.m.

Music Theatre (Ages 14 – 18)
Cannot decide between dance or drama? This combo class will give you the best of both worlds. Learn about musical theatre history while creating a performance with singing, dancing, and scenes from the great musicals of our time.
Tuesdays, 7:30 – 9 p.m.
